Our Place in the Golden Valley Artist Open Call: Creative Health & Wellbeing

Meadow Arts is looking for an artist to lead six creative workshops for a group of adults living with chronic pain in the Golden Valley, Herefordshire.

Commission details:

We are partnering with Taurus Healthcare as part of Our Place, a 3-year project by Meadow Arts focussing on creative health in the unique geographical location of the Golden Valley in rural southwest Herefordshire. The programme is collaborative, responsive to community engagement, site-specific and co-created with people living and working in the Golden Valley.

The sessions will run on one Wednesday per month, from March to September taking place at community halls in the Golden Valley, exact dates TBC. The group will meet 12 – 2.30pm. The first half of the session will be delivered by a healthcare professional looking at holistic support to pain management. The creative activity will take place in the second half of the workshop, and provide space for reflection and conversation through making, responding to the themes of Our Place.

Fee: £2,000 (8 days at £250 p/d) to include planning, delivery and evaluation. Materials and mileage costs (45p per mile) to be reimbursed up to an agreed amount.

What we are looking for:

We are seeking an artist with a sensitive, people-centred and collaborative approach, to work with the Meadow Arts team to design and deliver a series of activities that respond to the themes of the Our Place programme, and are responsive to the needs and ideas of the group as the project progresses.

Whilst applicants should have demonstrable experience of working or volunteering in a community and/or health context, and delivering workshops or activities suitable to a range of participants with different considerations and needs, this programme is not aiming to provide art therapy.

We are interested in hearing from a diverse applicant pool who identify themselves as having the relevant experience and approach. We are open to all types of contemporary visual art practice and media, but imagine sessions could include elements of collage, photography, mark making and mapping.

The artist must have access to their own transport and be able to travel to rural village settings.

The artist should have an Enhanced DBS or be willing to get one.

The artist will ideally be Herefordshire based, or live within a reasonable distance of the Golden Valley.

About Our Place

Our Place in the Golden Valley is a 3-year project by Meadow Arts focussing on the unique geographical location of the Golden Valley in rural southwest Herefordshire. Using contemporary visual arts we aim to connect with the communities that live there, reflecting upon and responding to their relationship to where they live.

The artistic programming will be collaborative, responsive to community engagement, site-specific and co-created. By connecting with the community and partners such as Kingstone GP Surgery, Healthwatch, Taurus Healthcare, Talk Community and local groups, we will ensure that the activity is collaborative, meaningful and sustainable. Each year artists will be commissioned to co-create artworks that will be exhibited and shared with the wider community in the Golden Valley and beyond.
