Picture This
For this inaugural exhibition, the artists were invited to produce site specific works in a contemporary response to the 18th century Picturesque. This most important artistic, aesthetic and philosophical movement, which sought to define artistically the optimal relationship between man and landscape, has had a crucial impact on subsequent approaches to landscape and the arts. Admittedly it still conditions our relationship to the natural environment, though often in an unconscious way.
In the context of our increasingly complex relationship to the countryside and the shifting relations between culture and nature, the propositions of the Picturesque take on new meanings which the artists included in Picture This set out to explore each in their own highly personal way.
