Meadow Arts is seeking a contemporary visual artist to create a new artwork for Borderlands, a three-year place-based partnership project running from March 2025 to March 2028.

In this first year of our BorderLands project, Meadow Arts is seeking an artist to develop a new commission in collaboration with communities situated in the Welsh Borders region. We invite an artist to explore the themes of borders, regions, and identity, responding to the landscape, histories, and communities of the area around Kington, Knighton and Hay on Wye.

We are particularly interested in visual artists working with performance-based approaches and those experienced in collaborative, community-led practice. The commissioned artist will spend time in the region, engaging with local people to co-create a performance-based work, performed and experienced directly by those taking part.

This work will be documented and shared online and in community venues, culminating in a high-profile exhibition at a leading cultural venue from April to June 2026 during an international arts and literature festival.

The total budget for this commission is £12,000 (inclusive of VAT), covering artist fees, production, and participatory activities. We welcome applications from artists of all backgrounds, particularly those from underrepresented communities, and we will work to ensure accessibility and flexibility in the commission’s delivery.

2. An indication of how you may approach this commission (including an outline budget detailing how your fee and expenses will be allocated).
3. Up to 3 examples of past work, with a focus on participatory and site-specific projects. 
4. A CV or bio outlining relevant experience.
