Pershore, 18 September 2023 

Meadow Arts, a leading contemporary visual art charity based in the West Midlands, is excited to announce the re-exhibition of a thought-provoking artwork titled Deluge at Pershore Abbey from 26 September to 30 November 2023.  

Deluge, a captivating artwork commissioned by Meadow Arts from renowned artist Hilary Jack, was originally displayed as part of the exhibition Watermark (28 January – 3 June 2023), which explored flooding events in Worcestershire and across the world as well as the global impact of climate change.  The artwork consists of two continuously scrolling LED text strips. The top line highlights actual recent flooding events, while the bottom line weaves together age-old flood narratives and myths from various cultures and distant civilisations, including the iconic tale of Noah’s Ark. 

In line with Pershore Abbey’s commitment to environmental consciousness as an Eco-Church, the project resonates deeply with their concerns about climate change.  

“We are delighted to be working with Meadow Arts again as we welcome “Deluge” into the Abbey. The striking simplicity of this piece will enable all who come into the Abbey to reflect on the reality of the climate crisis as communities both near and far experience the harsh reality of flooding. As an Eco Church we take seriously the call to think about what we can do to make a difference, so that we may tread more gently on God’s earth and reduce the possibility of terrible disasters.  

As we are reminded of the ancient stories of flooding, we are also reminded that they always point to the possibility of a better future. After the great story of the devastating flood in the Bible, God shows Noah a rainbow in the sky, a promise that God will not abandon humanity. A sign of hope that things will be better. I hope that “Deluge” challenges us, but that it ultimately reminds us that we are not without hope.”

The exhibition is one part of a collaborative project between Meadow Arts, Pershore Abbey and Pershore High School, with funding from The Elmley Foundation, and the Max Reinhardt Charitable Trust MaxLiteracy Award. Meadow Arts is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.  

This is a free event open to all. Pershore Abbey welcomes visitors daily, 8am – 5.30pm.
