Where Art Meets Rural Heritage: Out of Bounds at Acton Scott Heritage Farm

2 min read

It was wonderful to see Out of Bounds, a work by BorderLands artist Maya Rose Edwards, find a new temporary home at Acton Scott Heritage Farm Saturday 24 October, as part of Hedgerows in the Hills: A Celebration of Shropshire’s Countryside.

Created collaboratively with master hedge-layer Trefor Prothero, Maya’s full-sized hedge brings contemporary art and traditional rural craft together, celebrating the landscapes, skills and stories that shape our connection to the countryside.

Incorporating hazel stakes used during the communal Beating the Bounds walks, Out of Bounds explores how hedgerows hold stories of land, memory and belonging. Rooted in the local landscape, the work reflects on the ways these familiar features connect communities, histories and places across borders.

The Men From Off choir gathered around the hedge to sing, bringing another layer of community, tradition and storytelling to the occasion.

Originally commissioned for BorderLands at Hay Castle (15 May – 31 August 2026), the work forms part of Meadow Arts’ three-year BorderLands project. Its temporary setting at Acton Scott Heritage Farm offered a wonderful opportunity to bring the work into conversation with Shropshire’s rural heritage and celebrate the enduring relationship between art, landscape and traditional craft.
