Herefordshire Visual Artists Network

Project Insights

Thanks to funding support from Herefordshire Council via the UKSPF programme, the Herefordshire Visual Artists Network (HVAN) launched in November 2023. HVAN is a network of visual artists working across the county who come together to share news about their practice, ideas for forthcoming projects, network, and update their skills via bespoke CPD training.

The network is led by Gemma Moore, a young artist from rural Herefordshire. Gemma’s practice is socially engaged in nature, and aims to use art as a communication tool. She is currently pursuing a PhD with the Association for Dementia Studies at the University of Worcester exploring how a technique called mark making and exhibitions can be used as methods of exploring communication, expression and the lived experience of people living with dementia attending meeting centre.

Since its launch, HVAN have organised many engaging workshops for both its members and the public. These events have provided valuable opportunities for local artists to connect, learn, and grow together, fostering a vibrant artistic community in Herefordshire.

In October 2024, the HVAN put together an exhibition at De Koffi Pot, Hereford. UNFRAMED (2024) was a diverse exhibition showcasing 20 artists in the HVAN network. The exhibition aimed to explore what it meant for an artwork to be ‘unframed’ and to act as a metaphor to test boundaries, ideas and expectations of art practice. Artworks included a wide variety of paintings, drawing and sculpture. The exhibition was curated by Gemma Moore, HVAN Coordinator.
