Thank you to everyone who joined us on Thursday 16 May, for the public launch of Baroque Sprawl (2024) by artist Laura White.

This monumental installation marks the culmination of a collaborative three-year public art programme led by Meadow Arts and Hereford College of Arts. 

Drawing inspiration from the dynamic and flowing style of the Baroque period, artist Laura White’s creation pays homage to Bernini’s famous sculpture, Apollo and Daphne (1622 – 1625) which is represented on the large billboard on the Aylestone Hill end of the building.

When the sculpture was raised off the ground to be installed onto the wall – only then did I see it in its entirety. Making the work on the ground, applying layers of scaffolding sheeting to a gigantic metal frame was a challenge. I was relieved and extremely happy to see it when it was up – it was so much MORE than I had imagined it would be.

The project is one of fifteen launched in the city thanks to the support of Stronger Hereford and HM Government’s Towns Fund.
