Dermot Clarke at Fairfield High School, Hereford

2 min read

Artist Dermot Clarke worked with Year 9 Art students at Fairfield High School, Herefordshire to create a site specific artwork inspired by the artist Lothar Götz installation at Station Approach, Hereford. Dermot worked with the students to design their own wall painting based on the theme of locality, which they were then able to recreate on a wall within their school as a permanent co-created installation. Meadow Arts Executive Director, Clare Purcell, visited the school to meet the artist, students and teachers involved.

From June 2022 to April 2023 German artist Lothar Götz transformed the area around No. 1 Station Approach next to Hereford Railway Station. Götz made two monumental and vibrant geometric artworks that were displayed on each end of Hereford College of Arts (HCA) and NMiTE’s new student accommodation. A number of dazzling flags designed by the artist were also installed by the building. The artworks marked the start of a new cultural gateway to Hereford, welcoming visitors and enriching residents’ experience of the city.

The artists who have been commissioned for year 2 of the No.1 Station Approach programme are Matthew Cornford and John Beck. The associated engagement programme will continue to reach out to residents, visitors, students, artists as well as the wider community to stimulate debate and showcase Hereford as a cultural destination.
