Rambling the Line: an artist-led walk up Hergest Ridge

Join us for a walk up Hergest Ridge, led by artist Celia Johnson.

Meeting and returning to the Village Hall in Gladestry, this artist-led walk explores how we move through and experience the landscape, and borders, through a consideration and use of the line – mostly walked, sometimes drawn, and sometimes written.

From Gladestry village, we’ll cross from the Welsh side of the border to England. Heading up Hergest Ridge, we’ll create a range of artistic responses to this historic landscape, and discover new ways of ‘walking’, in the broadest sense’.

This walk is organised as part of Meadow Arts’ BorderLands project, a three-year, place-based partnership project inspired by Offa’s Dyke and the Welsh Border region. It challenges the idea of borders dividing territory and communities and instead sees them as places of connection and shared identity. Through contemporary visual art, the project invites communities to reflect on how they experience and interpret borders in their own lives and globally.

Please note: pencils and sketchbooks will be provided but please wear weather appropriate clothes and bring a snack – we will stop for a teatime break.

Previous drawing or writing experience isn’t needed at all – this walk encourages a playful, creative and experimental response to the environment.

Accessibility notes: The walk is graded moderate, meaning that there may be some short sections of steep gradients and some rough terrain but any climb will be taken at a relaxed pace. These walks are suitable for most people of average fitness.

There aren’t regular seating areas along the walk, so please be advised that rest breaks may entail sitting on the ground (if dry), rocks or other places.

The walk is not suited for regular mobility vehicles. Anyone wishing to complete the walk using an off-road mobility vehicle should contact us in advance.
