Artist Maya Rose Edwards has been leading a series of creative mapping workshops across Hay-on-Wye, Kington and Presteigne as part of Meadow Arts’ BorderLands project. Participants explored local landmarks and the Wales-England border, sharing stories and insights as they walked through the towns, noticing familiar places, hidden corners and the layers of history that shape each area.

Back at the venues, they drew from memory, capturing significant border landmarks and details that bring new perspectives on these shared landscapes. The sketches made by community members will be incorporated into a series of BorderLands maps that will feature in an exhibition at Hay Castle from May to September 2026.

The workshops offered a thoughtful space to connect, observe and create, celebrating the character of the three unique border towns and the communities who live there.

BorderLands which is a three-year, place-based partnership project inspired by Offa’s Dyke and the Welsh Border region. BorderLands in 2025-26 is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). The UK Shared Prosperity Fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK investing in communities and place, supporting local business, and people and skills.
