Vase: Silkeborg

Clare Twomey

Vase: Silkeborg

This artwork featured in The Precious Clay (2019).

Famous for her large-scale projects, Twomey chose ceramics and particularly porcelain early in her career. This project is the result of a performance at the Jorn Museum in Denmark dedicated to the famous Danish artist, Asger Jorn (1913), who was a great believer in spontaneity and self-expression in art. Twomey encouraged visitors to spontaneously draw on the surface of sixty white vases from the popular Kähler Design. Using the language of gilded fine porcelain, the visitors scribbles were then copied into gold enamel, thereby elevating the status of these humble vases.
