True Stories
This artwork featured in Shakti (2013).
These works were made in response to the Sir Benjamin Stone (1838-1914) archive of photographs located at Birmingham Library. Parmar’s sensitive re-contextualisation of his works brings forward the captioning (often written on the back of the images) written on behalf of the subject by Stone or archivists. Strategically positioned in the Museum, these contemporary works comment upon the nature of ‘ethnographic’ collections and how they inform histories.
