There Is No Border Here

This artwork featured in BorderLands (2026).

Shilpa Gupta is an Indian artist based in Mumbai, India. Much of her work addresses borders drawn between countries, people and within ourselves.

The yearning, lyrical text of Gupta’s pattern poem There Is No Border Here underlines the abstract nature of border divisions. The high-visibility tape from which the letters are made, draws attention to a more violent aspect of border politics, while also reminding us of security measures in the era of terrorism.

Here Gupta uses highly poetic language and imagery to express a very personal attempt to deal with ideas of control. She inserts the ‘I’ and the ‘you’ in the image of an anonymous national flag, reminding us of the psychological damage that political divisions can induce.
