Tale of Two Moons

André Lichtenberg

Tale of Two Moons

This artwork featured in BorderLands (2026).

In the summer of 2016, shortly after the Brexit referendum, André Lichtenberg, a Brasilian-German artist based in the UK, decided to create a new body of work reflecting on the United Kingdom’s southeastern border and the vast waters of the English Channel. Each seascape in this series, Impossible Utopia, is captured over several continuous photographs taken over one hour. The scene is photographed in small detail in a slow methodical process that creates a large-scale representations of the border, evoking more than could be achieved by a single photograph.

As an artistic response to the turmoil caused by Brexit, Lichtenberg aimed to offer the viewer a calm canvas for reflection, a utopic but also pragmatic space for reflection and hope.
