Siblinghood

British Ghanaian artist Larry Achiampong considers the current social and political moment, with the rise of nationalisms and moments of tensions such as the Brexit vote of 2016.

In the same year, the Pan African Union embarked on a project to establish the free circulation of people within the continent, with a view to potentially open borders across a unified African continent in the future. The flags evoke solidarity and collective empathy, bearing an iconography symbolising a move towards unity and equilibrium. Green, black and red reflect the land, people and the struggles of the African continent, while yellow-gold represents a new day and prosperity.

Achiampongh’s Pan African flags have toured the country, but this version, ‘Siblinghood’, was selected specially for BorderLands and is seen here for the first time.
