Lester (Tenement Films)
This artwork featured in Never Judge a Book (2016).
Fowler was commissioned to produce four films for Channel 4’s Shorts strand. They are a series of portraits of four individuals who shared a Victorian flat in Glasgow. Lester is the final and the most mellifluous, it features a warm, ornate score by Charles Curtis. We can only guess that Lester is an avid reader, the camera keeps panning back to the bookshelf, as if looking for answers, attempting to reclaim or re-situate his place in the world. The books on one’s own shelves speak of what has fed and shaped us, of our intimate choices. As the film suggests, books and reading create an inner landscape as well as a way of looking at the world around us.
