Plough

“This sculpture captures Herefordshire’s agricultural legacy, featuring a contemporary plough suspended from a wooden yoke. Forged Aluminium arms and tines, resembling a working plough, are joined with machined brass elements, highlighting the historic roots of farming.
The design pays homage to ancestral ploughs, emphasising strength and skeletal aesthetics. Traditionally forged chains suspend the sculpture, evoking horse-drawn plough tack. A charcoal-anodised body and arms with silver tines will offset the plough against the Hereford City backdrop. The plough while symbolises the backbone of Herefordshire – a testament to its hard-working communities and agricultural heritage.” – Dan Moss
Plough was commissioned by Hereford College of Arts in 2024 as part of a collaborative project between Hereford College of Arts, Meadow Arts and Herefordshire Council. It is one part of the Art + People + Place programme, commissioned in partnership with Studio Response as part of the £6 million Hereford City Centre Improvements (HCCI) project.

About the artist
Dan Moss
Dan Moss, was born in Watford and grew up in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. After leaving school at 16 he joined a German company Lieherr, and he completed a 5-year apprenticeship as a heavy plant mechanical engineer. In 2010 on his return from a 6month trip to Japan, he decided to start his career as a blacksmith. Working with a blacksmith base in Baldock in Hertfordshire, Ronnie Shipman told Daniel about the degree course in artist blacksmithing in Herefordshire. Enrolling on the course in 2011 and graduating in 2014 with a first class BA Hons it was time to set up his own workshop and forge.
Dan has slowly been growing his business as a blacksmith, engineer and welder fabricator making gates, railings, and tools. He teaches blacksmithing at Hereford and Ludlow College at Holme Lacey campus and his class at Hereford Make.
