Holofernes Finter
Meadow Arts Commission 2012-13
For this ambitious and fanciful project, the artist John M Robinson has inserted the made up character of Holofernes Finter into the history of Sir Richard Croft. The artist has transposed the narrative to Croft Castle and imagined scenes in which Finter brings about the tragic death of Croft. Revolving around the recorded fact that Croft died with a copy of Love’s Labour’s Lost in his hand, the artist uses motifs from this play such as the unattainable Princess and the four suitors in four tents.
These paintings are based on a series of performances, re-enactments and lectures, in which the artist dressed up as the two men and played out the mock-tragedy of the downfall of Croft. These events took place at Croft in the summer of 2012.
